"I took this picture in 2008. You go into a bingo hall, and it feels like you're stepping back into the 1960s"

Decisive moment or setup ?

Un Regard Oblique, a 1948 photo taken by Robert Doisneau for his LIFE magazine assignment, was executed with Doisneau’s usual flair for humor. A couple looks at the window and the man is enthralled by the portrait of a naked woman (very vulgar picture by the standards of the time) while his wife talks to him about a photo which is presumably more modest.

Possibility of Aurora in Northern hemispheres this evening extending south as far as Ireland.

From the British Geological Survey

Since 13th February three energetic solar flares have erupted on the Sun and spewed clouds of charged plasma called coronal mass ejections (CMEs) out towards the Earth. The biggest of the three flares (an X2.2 at 01:56, 15th Feb) is the largest in over four years. We need to go back to the 13th Dec 2006 to find a bigger one.

Already one CME arrived on the 14th sparking Valentine's Day displays of the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) further south than usual. See pictures from Northern Ireland in the UK (external link)

The other two CMEs are expected to arrive in the next 24-48 hours. Recent estimates suggest arrival later on the 17th or early 18th Feb. Magnetic storms are likely to follow the arrival of these later CMEs.

Further Northern Lights (aurora) displays are possible some time over the next two nights if skies are clear and the activity peaks in your local night-time.

See tips on viewing the Northern Lights.

'The air was warm, the sun was low, and a thunderstorm was about to break. So I took off my clothes and posed'

so the next time you see a naked woman running back and forth amongst the rocks - you'll know what's going on....

"Normally I work alone, photographing myself using a cable release. But it wasn't long enough so I had to ask one of the crew to press the shutter. Thankfully, he timed it right and got the wave breaking on the rock. It was difficult, though: he didn't know how to wind the film on, and I had to keep rushing back to the camera, 20 metres away over slippery rocks. And the rain was just about to start, so we were in a real hurry."

The first time I saw this emperor penguin was inside our hut on Ross Island in the Antarctic. He was a full metre tall and just stood around looking at us all, being very friendly. The year was 1959 and I had travelled to Antarctica with the navy at the end of October, when summer was just beginning. We took lots of shots, making the most of the penguin's friendliness. I've even got one of him standing at the bar with all the navy people drinking to his health. He was very co-operative, if slightly bewildered. He just kept acting like he wanted more photos taken....... http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2011/feb/02/robert-mccabe-best-shot-photography
